Schnitzelburg Community Fun & Neighborhood Events
The Schnitzelburg Spring Walk is just around the corner, literally. There will be tons of fun for the whole family when this close-knit community gets together and throws a party in the streets. On Saturday, April 27, Hickory Street will be lined with friends and neighbors who enjoy having fun together. Food and music will fill the streets and local pubs will host special events.
In the summer Schnitzelburg plays host to what is perhaps the most obscure sporting event in America. Every last Monday in July, the World Dainty Championship is held outside of Hauck’s Handy Store. Dainty, the German cousin to stickball, has been played in Schnitzelburg since the 19th century, but the World Championship didn’t start until 1971. To play dainty all you have to do is use a broomstick to knock a smaller stick, or “dainty”, into the air, and then hit again as far as you can. The current record is 145 ½ feet, set by Gene Klein in 1981. This competition is not child’s play, though, contestants must be 45 or older to participate in this unique Louisville tradition.
Local Hot Spots
But there’s no need to wait for a special event to have fun in Schnitzelburg. There’s lots of fun to be had year round. For instance, Check’s Café on the corner of Hickory and Burnett, offers some of the best food in Louisville. Established in 1943, this neighborhood institution is a favorite lunch spot for local businesses and law enforcement, who are especially fond of Check’s Famous Chili.
And then there is Goss Avenue Antiques, Louisville’s largest antique mall. Open five days a week and located inside a historic former train station, Goss Avenue Antiques offers an eclectic array of furniture and various curiosities for adventurous and conservative shoppers alike.
Schnitzelburg is not without a night-life, either. Just like Germantown, Schnitzelburg is peppered with local pubs and bars which offer a variety of entertainment. Like Groucho’s on Goss Avenue, who boasts a wide selection of beers, from obscure imports and artisan brews to the familiar tastes of Coors Light and PBR. Along with what those in the know consider the best karaoke in town, Groucho’s hosts comedy shows, musical performances, and even plays movies.
With all that’s going on in Schnitzelburg, anyone living in this neighborhood, whether a newlywed couple, a large family, or college student, will never be bored. Because all you need to have fun in Schnitzelburg is a decent pair of sneakers, and maybe a stroller.
